The way of all flesh!

Fresh in the morning, entering the pristine pure environs of the campus where drops of dew from canopies of raintrees showered their pleasentness, I reassured myself for a bright start. Here I am with my first ever blog just to reflect on some of the usual and unsual musings I come across, contemplate and wonder about.

All these days, when I thought of starting a blog to spill out my thoughts, some vague inertia held me back. The dilemna was, whether to write about anything and everything I think, which should only add to the deluge of blogging sites where girls rant about or something specific and objective not pertiaining to my ego-self. One of my friends offered me a wise suggestion that I should be writing on Science, for that is my profession. One of my favourite Science blogs is maintained by a Professor from my institute, Nonoscience.

To start with, I would like to refer the celebrated article of the celebrated Physicist Weinberg (in photo) on the 4 golden lessons for a young scientist (Nature, 2003 and here if you do not have the subscription).
The gist of the article is summed up as follows,
i) Don't spend to long getting to know what others have done (i.e., in literature survey); start your contribution by doing your research.
ii) Don't wade in safe waters, move out of the harbour into the messy areas - thats where you discover.
iii) Forgive yourself for wasting time in the workdesk, even your work gets boring. You need to pass through this to get your job done. (Caution : Focus should be only on your research problem).
iv) Learn something about the history of science or atleast the history of your own branch of science.
Be wary of getting carried away by oversimplified models of science propounded by some of the philosophers like Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn.

Let me post some more blogs with simiilar flavour soon....
